Windows 7 - option to move file to another folder

Postby mikey » Sun Jul 25, 2010 7:22 am

One thing I found frustrating about Windows 7 was not being able to right click on a file and select 'move to folder' from the drop down menu - just one of those little annoying things  - not sure if anybody else used this option in previous versions of Windows? Anyway, let me know and I'll send you the link to the 'fix'

I don't have Windows 7 yet, Mikey, but I would definitely miss that option. Glad there's a fix for it.

Hi Mikey

I find that very annoying too - amongst other things. I would like to know the fix. I managed to find a way around the problem, but it's certainly not ideal. Just as a trial, I deleted the file to the recycle bin. In the recycle bin I right clicked on it, did "cut" and went into the folder I wanted to move it to, and did "paste". It's a ridiculous way of going about things, but I was just curious to know if there was a way of doing it. I know it would be easier to copy it to the folder and then delete the file from the original location, but it was an experiment.

I also find that the keystrokes for closing down the PC no longer work i.e. Ctrl+ESC keys and then pressing "U" and "U", which turns off the PC in previous Windows versions. I now have to do Ctrl+ESC keys and right arrow to "shut down" and then pressing Enter.

Another annoying feature, which Microsoft say is TalkTalk's fault and vice versa, is; when I download e-mails to my Netbook and laptop and then to the desktop, the e-mails stay on the Server. As soon as I download to the PC first and then try to download to the Netbook or laptop, the e-mails have been deleted from the Server. I know once they are downloaded they are safe, but if I go on holiday and take the Netbook or laptop, the messages I want to refer to haven't been downloaded and are also deleted from the Server. A pain in the neck, if ever there was. I suspect it's Windows 7, because in the "idiot's guide" books I've bought about Windows 7, it mentions the fact that "Windows Live Mail" which is loaded on the Netbook (used to be called Outlook Express), deletes the messages from the Server. It's either the Netbook using Windows Live Mail that deletes the messages, or it's TalkTalk. I've made sure that "leave messages on the Server" is ticked on all 3 machines, but they are still deleted from the Server

I've got a gremlin in Windows 7, and Dell are going to re-load it for me on Thursday, which means I'll have to re-install all the software again including the printer software etc. What a pig!

I'm not impressed

Maybe I’m missing something here, sure the right click doesn’t have the same functionality in Windows 7 of Move to or Copy to that XP had but I seriously don’t see why this would be a problem ... it does have Copy, Cut and Paste .... using Cut or Copy on the selected folder select the destination folder you want to move it to from the Explorer sidebar and paste it ... or easier still drag the folder you want to move in to the desired folder in the Explorer Sidebar .... See screen captures

If you cannot live without the Move to, or Copy to in the right click functionality you could add a couple of new registry keys to the registry to enable the function .. be warned though if you do this incorrectly at best you will slow yor system down and at worst make the system inoprable which will lead to a clean install. You also have to realise that W7 was designed without this feature and by adding new registry keys you may experiance some functionality issues .... for details on how to, see link below.

Pam, you are right in saying that Outlook Express was replaced with Windows Mail when VISTA was introduced but was then dropped with the introduction of Windows 7, which has no preinstalled software for email and requires an additional software program such as Outlook 2003, 2007 or 2010.
You may find this link useful in configuring Windows Mail in VISTA ...

I used this particular option on a regular basis - just something I got so used to, so found it interrupted my workflow when it disappeared in Windows 7 - thats all.

Hi

I agree with Mikey that you now click and drag to move and Ctrl+click and drag to copy, but I do miss the "move" facility. I think they call it progress.

Ed, my Netbook has Windows 7 starter with Windows Live Mail. However, I think it could be the culprit in that my e-mails are deleted from the Server. Perhaps I'm trying to do too many download with PC, laptop and netbook. If I just downloaded to the PC I wouldn't have the problem. I shall experiment and see what happens.

Ed, my "goodwill gesture" printer arrived from Dell. Bad news is; when they help me with re-installing Windows 7 tomorrow, I'll have to re-install all the software again. I'm going to ask if I can do a "repair" if Windows 7 has that option. I've repaired Windows XP in the past and it seemed to solve the problem.

Better get back to my "idiot's guide" books.
